Buffalo First’s Think Local First Initiative

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Think Local First initiative aims to promote, strengthen and reinforce Buffalo’s local economy.

Local ownership and purchasing has many benefits:

  • Neighborhood Wealth: Three times more money stays in Buffalo when purchases are made locally because local businesses spend locally via taxes, sourcing and pay (Civic Economics).
  • Economic Self-Sufficiency: Locally owned independent businesses create not only jobs but community assets and wealth, which make citizens truly self-sufficient.
  • Neighborhood Stabilization: Locally-owned businesses are less likely to relocate than national businesses.  Local retail helps stabilize communities over the long-term and attract tourists & residents.  Neighborhoods around major retail strips such as Elmwood and Hertel Avenues exemplify this.
  • Charitable Assets: Local businesses donate 350% more to nonprofits than national businesses; this helps communities thrive and alleviates burdens on government.
  • Local Culture: Independent retail gives Buffalo a unique sense of place that attracts and retains the young creative class (Richard Florida).
  • Sustainability: Local shopping and sourcing reduces our use of oil (due to reduced transportation distance) and creates a healthier environment.
  • Community Health: Local sourcing, particularly of food, is far healthier for Buffalo residents and the planet because foods can retain more nutrients.
  • Smart Growth and Walkable Communities: Local retail districts promote Smart Growth development and more walkable communities.
  • Maximizes our Tax Dollars: Compared to national corporations local businesses use significantly fewer tax subsidies and incentives to develop (Greg LeRoy).

The Think Local First initiative includes:

  • Localization consulting with independent businesses is designed to educate area retailers about local sourcing options.  The goal is to more divert money to Buffalo’s economy and reduce shipping miles.  (Emphasis will be on connecting to businesses in underserved areas.)
  • Monthly series that educates the public about local, green and fair economies.
  • A directory (on-line and print) of local, green, and fair businesses.
  • Local coupon book.
  • Local purchasing card.
  • Annual holiday Buy Buffalo Bash.
  • Retail Kits.
  • Advertising campaign.
