LOCALIZATION

What is Localization?

Localization focuses on many things: local consumer purchasing, local sourcing, connecting neighborhoods, connecting urban and rural regional economies, shortening global supply chains to save energy, reducing travel distance between home, work and play; and decreasing distances from production to consumption.  Essentially, when we can trace where consumer dollars end up after a purchase we can begin to find ways to redirect spending to maximize its impact.  Additionally by tracking supply chains and other forms of transportation we can find short distance alternatives that significantly reduce our carbon footprint and help the environment.

How Localization Works For Local Business

Local purchasing and sourcing helps to sustain businesses that are owned and operated in Buffalo by directing more spending to them.  Many studies conclude that shopping locally has three times the economic impact as shopping at a national business.  This is because local independent businesses are located in Buffalo and when a dollar is spent with them it is re-spent in Buffalo in many more ways than it would be if that same dollar was spent at a national business.  This is because local business owners are more likely to source their products locally, they are paying taxes here, they bank here, pay living/recreational expenses here; they may pay employees and managers who live here etc.  When a dollar is spent with a national firm most of it leaves Buffalo almost immediately to go to corporate headquarters and shareholders, a small percentage stays in our area in the form of employee pay and possibly some taxes.
